6th Creative Writing and Translation Competition

Within the Faculty of Science and Letters at Çankaya University, the Departments of English Language and Literature and Translation and Interpreting Studies will organize the Creative Writing and Translation Competition. The aim of the competition is to cultivate a love for creative writing and literary translation among young people, encourage students to learn foreign languages, guide them to explore creative expression in the language they are learning, and raise language awareness and sensitivity through literary works.

The 6th edition of the competition, held in 2015, has the theme: “In Pursuit of Happiness.”

Key Dates:

  • Submission Deadline: 31 March 2015

  • Live Performance and Final: 11 May 2015

The competition will be held in two categories—literary essay and literary translation—and is open to student writers and translators from all high schools in Turkey.

Competition Objectives:

The goals of this award-winning competition are to:

  1. Help young people better express their thoughts and feelings in a foreign language (English).

  2. Encourage students to create, write, and enjoy reading creative texts in a foreign language.

  3. Guide them to read and translate literary texts in both their native language and the foreign language.

  4. Reward students capable of using their learned foreign language creatively.

  5. Emphasize the concepts of essay and literary translation.

  6. Highlight the importance of creativity in literary translation.

  7. Promote the creation of bridges between literatures and cultures through literary translation and introduce the profession of translation.

  8. Convey the importance of literature and literary translation to young people and foster a lasting love for literature and translation.


Conditions for Participation in the English Essay Category:

  • Participants must be high school students.

  • The English essay or literary translation must be the participant’s own work.

  • All works must be read and approved by the participant’s English teachers.

  • Essays must not exceed 350 words, be typed, and indicate the total word count at the end.

  • Essays must have a proper title, be written in 12-point Times New Roman, and use double spacing.

  • Evaluation criteria: creativity and argument support, organization, variety in vocabulary and sentence structure, an appropriate title, correct grammar, proper punctuation and spelling, and adherence to format.

  • Essays must not have been submitted to other competitions or published previously. If detected, awards will be revoked.

  • Participants must submit one copy of their essay in a sealed envelope to the contact address below, including:
    a) Contact details of the participant’s school (phone, fax, address)
    b) Signed parental consent form
    c) CD containing the essay or translation

  • Envelopes must reach Çankaya University by 31 March 2015.


Conditions for Participation in the Literary Translation Category:

  • Participants must be high school students.

  • Participants must translate the text provided on the Çankaya University Translation and Interpreting Studies Department website from English into Turkish.

  • The translation must be the participant’s own work.

  • All translations must be read and approved by the participant’s English teachers.

  • Translations must have a proper title, be typed in 12-point Times New Roman, double-spaced, and saved on a CD.

  • Evaluation criteria: accuracy in conveying cultural references, careful word choice, correct grammar, faithful representation of the source text’s main idea, coherence and completeness, adherence to punctuation and spelling rules, and compliance with format.

  • Participants must submit one copy of their translation in a sealed envelope to the contact address below, including:
    a) Contact details of the participant’s school
    b) Signed parental consent form
    c) CD containing the work

  • Envelopes must reach Çankaya University by 31 March 2015.

  • Applications with incomplete information or submitted after 31 March 2015 will not be considered.

  • Participants may enter only one category.

  • Travel and accommodation expenses are not covered.
